What This Week? Ready Steady Cook Challenge!

So I am broke.

I blame this blog….as you can see I like to blame others for my shortcomings (Adrian!).

But honestly, spices and all that jazz are the bane of my wallet….and apparently you need all that stuff to give your food actual taste…more fool me for thinking food actually has integral taste…I’m learning!

So I addressed my peers today in the newsroom and told them that the blog would have to be put on hold for a week due to my ‘zero’ bank balance…Now I wouldn’t like to say that the room fell totally silent…but you could pretty much hear a pin drop….and a few sobs….

Then James the genius piped up- really living up to his new name I must say-

‘No. Wait Jess! This can’t happen! I can’t let you do that….there must be something we can do…’

…..cue moody, rising to inspirational music as he stares towards the window, fingers fondling beard….

‘By God I’ve got it! A ready steady cook style challenge! We’ll all donate an ingredient and you’ll have to make something edible from them all! Damn, I really am a genius…’

….Cue sexy music as he runs his fingers though his hair, flashes a smile and does a finger gun at the camera, a twinkle in his eye….

The room whooped and nodded in agreement….

And so, this week, it’s a student style, impoverished, likely to be truly horrific, probably will result in a week off uni, Ready Steady Cook challenge…..AGH!

The Response: James Is A Genius!

I should mention that approximately 12 hours after this response I had to take a day off uni because I felt pretty bleak…I like to think it wasn’t because of my cooking…but who knows!

Long may we all survive my cooking!

Tonight I Will Be Making…

The Recipe Book

Preparation method…proposed by James:

Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan. Add the green curry paste and sugar and cook over a fairly high heat for about a minute, stirring with the lemongrass paste. Reduce the heat slightly and stir in the chicken pieces and lime leaves or zest until coated in the paste. Add the chilli and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the coconut milk and soy sauce and bring to a simmer, cooking for 25-30 minutes until thickened slightly. Stir in the coriander and lime juice. Check for seasoning, adding more soy sauce if needed.

The curry is now best left to sit for a few minutes so the sauce becomes creamier.

Serve with your choice of rice

What This Week? (Asian food)

Now I know I haven’t posted a response to the pasta dish just yet…and that because I’m not happy with the video, and am considering a better way to rate my meals…any ideas, let me know…

However, I do need to know what I’m going to make this week?

The theme this week is ASIAN….so shoot- Asian meals I can create…..thanks!

The Daily Munch:salmon and creme fraiche pasta

’Pasta La Vista Baby’…That was lame…much like the pasta…

Thanks to Lucy and Anne for the filming

Tonight I will be making…

Ok…seeing as my friends would like me to cook a ‘real meal, not just a cake!!!’ I have had to choose the only main course that has been suggested…well there were two suggestions, but Lucy is awkward and won’t eat omelet…and so, tonight I will be making this….
November 8th, 2010 at 9:16 am | edit Okay, so your friends are fussy. try this:

Pasta – cook til al dente (that means done, but slightly chewy).
Stir in a small tub of creme fraiche, chopped up smoked salmon and slices of spring onion/leek while the pasta is still hot.

Serve immediately. Add salt to taste, and plenty of pepper.

Sounds easy!!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Midweek Munch…pancakes!

A healthy start to the day!

How To Be An Un-Domesticated Goon:

So I just thought I’d give you a little insight into how terribly un-domesticated I am….but how I do sometimes try, despite my inevitable failure.

A clear saturday morning light filters in through my blinds. I put some music on and lie back because it’s Saturday- no news required…I’m feeling positive about my food endeavor…my friends who are to be eating it, not so much… so i think ‘how about I rustle up a nice breakie to kick start the day?!’. So I have a nose around in my pretty empty kitchen…find pancakes and fruit- sweet!

So I warm up some pre-made pancakes, stack them all sexy like, drizzle golden syrup in a fashion Ainsley Harriott would be jealous of, getting into it now, scatter some fruit around to the beat of a sweet little French tune that wafts on the airwaves, birds sing outside and my heart warms with the joy of creating.

I sit on my white linen sheets and look out my window. This isn’t going to be too hard….Nigela, eat your heart out…

Tastes like ass.

Really…apparently I have managed to burn the pancakes… Seriously…I can’t even operate a toaster! Well that is my motto in life– burnt is better!…the fruit isn’t too fresh and in general it’s just uber average…FAIL.

I sit defeated on the end of bed…it’s raking up old memories… takes me back to the age of girlie sleepovers and the amount of stick I used to get from my friends who, at the age of 17ish, could already whip up a kick-ass dinner party for all of us. I would stumble down to the kitchen in the morning where a bowl of batter would be promptly handed to me so the girls could all get their morning laugh watching me try and defend the burnt lump that I had created….well enough is enough!

So my first personal challenge…learn how to make ‘The Finest Pancakes Known To Man!!….or maybe just ‘Better Than Average Pancakes’...ok.

So help, tips. advice? Go ahead help a girl out!
